About the Item

Antique Art Nouveau pewter inkwell Continental Pewter c. 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 10 cm x 21.5 cm x 15.5 cm This beautiful pewter inkwell was designed and crafted at the turn of the 20th century, during the height of the Art Nouveau period. Its design celebrates the beauty of nature and showcases the craftsmanship of European artists active during this flourishing era in the history of decorative arts. The piece features an organic form, characterised by naturalistic, flowing lines and asymmetrical shapes. Shaped like a closed lily flower, the inkwell serves as the centrepiece of the antique. Its hinged top lifts to reveal a compartment for ink. The flower rests on a swirling stem that extends to the base, designed to hold writing instruments or office supplies. The base is richly detailed, evoking a serene lake scene. It is adorned with sinuous lines suggesting water currents, where a pair of carps swims gracefully. The lake's edges are framed with bullrushes and a budding water lily, enhancing the natural motif. The piece stands on four delicate spherical feet. Pewter was a favoured material in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its cost and ease of casting. This made it ideal for the fluid, intricate forms that define the Art Nouveau style, as exemplified beautifully in this inkwell. Expertly crafted and depicting a charming, nature-inspired scene, this inkwell would make a distinctive and elegant addition to one’s office space.
