About the Item

This is a wonderful antique French Empire Revival ormolu mounted and patinated Verde Antico marble inkstand, Circa 1870 in date. Of rectangular form with a pair of raised inkwells with glass liners having ormolu covers, surmounted by a spread eagle and bearing the signature Pinedo, for the renowned Parisian sculptor Emile Pinedo. There is no mistaking its unique quality and design, which is sure to make it a treasured piece by any discerning collector. Condition: In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: height 22 x width 35 x depth 22 Dimensions in inches: height 9 inches x width 1 foot, 2 inches x depth 9 inches Emile PINEDO (1840-1916) Emile Pinedo was born in 1840, a sculptor and producer of high quality bronzes, succeeding his father in 1865 and debuting at the Paris Salon in 1870. This artist's works have gone up for sale at auction 238 times, mostly in the Sculpture-Volume category. The oldest auction recorded on our site is «Si Tu Savais !» sold in 1989 at Sotheby's (Sculpture-Volume) and the most recent is Floreal sold in 2022. Serpentine Marble / Verde Antico Serpentine is a major rock forming mineral and is found as a constituent in many metamorphic and weathered igneous rocks. Serpentine’s structure is composed of layers of silicate tetrahedrons linked into sheets; this structure is what gives it its high flexural strength rating. Verde Antico is the commercial name for the serpentine “marble” derived from highly sheared ultramafic rocks that have been rewelded and metasomatized by the process of serpentinization. These ultramafic bodies are now recognized as segments of ancient oceanic crust that became part of the eastern North American continent during the Taconian orogeny. This is considered to be middle Ordovician in age, around 450 million years ago. More deformation and metamorphism took place during the Acadian orogeny around 360 million years ago. Ormolu - gilt bronze (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze.The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'. The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

This very stylish French Empire gilt bronze and marble inkstand is a fine example. It is made from superb figured green marble. The triform base is raised onto bronze pads. The main inkwell body is in matching green figured marble which is raised onto ornate lion’s paw feet. The body is beautifully hand turned and separated with ormolu mounts and a lift off cover. Inside the git interior is inset with an original glass liner for ink. This very pleasing piece is in excellent original condition with very little sign of wear to the original gilding.
