About the Item

English Inkwell with Faceted Crystal Body Origin: United Kingdom, Birmingham Material: Cut crystal, sterling silver mount Date: 1905 Dimensions: H × Ø: 13 × 9 cm Description: This spherical inkwell is crafted from heavy, faceted cut crystal. The surface features a regular diamond pattern that reflects light in all directions, enhancing the sculptural effect of the rounded form. The cylindrical neck is fitted with a sterling silver mount and a hinged lid. The inner rim bears full British hallmarks: the anchor for Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter “f” for the year 1905. The maker’s mark “H&T” identifies the silversmiths Hilliard & Thomason, active in Birmingham during the second half of the 19th century. A distinctive functional feature is the centrally placed faceted glass finial inside the lid. This is not intended as a handle but rather functions as a drop catcher, designed to prevent ink from spilling when the lid is closed – a clever and refined solution typical of the period. Remarks: Hilliard & Thomason were known for producing fine decorative silverware in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Inkwells such as this one, combining elaborate crystal cutting with precise silverwork, were prestigious desk accessories in their time. The technical sophistication and formal elegance of this piece make it a sought-after collector’s object today. Condition: Very good condition. The glass is clear and undamaged; the silver with mild, age-appropriate tarnish.
