A Very Good 19th Century Cut Glass & Sterling Silver Inkstand / Capstan

About the Item

The robust globular shaped & cut glass body is fitted with a sterling silver collar & hinged lid, the interior retains its original removable glass reservoir. The inkwell sits within its impressively large & heavy sterling silver base, richly decorated overall with embossed foliate motifs and featuring a blank cartouche intended for either a monogram or a dedication. The sterling silver collar, lid & base bearing impressed London hallmarks with date letter for 1888 and makers marks for noted London silversmith Charles Boyton II. The base alone weighs an impressive 212 grams or 6.81 troy ounces of sterling silver.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Both the inkwell and the sterling silver base remain in very good overall condition. The foot of the glass inkwell has a flake but which is not at all visible when fitted inside the sterling silver base.
