A Very Good 19th Century Napoleon III Gilt Bronze & Marble Inkstand, Circa 1870

About the Item

The crescent shaped & dished ‘verdi alpi’ marble base affixed with a pair of lidded gilt bronze inkpots (glass inkwells absent), decorated with fine engine turned detail, flanking a marble column surmounted by an impressive gilt bronze eagle final perched atop an orb. Raised overall on three supports, one being a later replacement. As a matter of interest, the eagle is shown with its head turned to the right, its wings slightly unfurled and its talons clutching Jupiter’s thunderbolts. This particular emblem was originally designed by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) and was adopted by Napoleon for his triumphant Grande Armee during the 1st Empire Period (1804-1815).
