About the Item

Cut Crystal Inkwell with Gilt Metal Mount Origin: France Material: Cut crystal, gilt metal Date: Early 20th century Dimensions: H × W × D: approx. 9 × 8 × 8 cm Description: Square inkwell made of heavy, clear-cut crystal, mounted in a finely crafted gilt metal base with vertical fluting and four rounded feet. The body features tiered, architectural contours with pronounced light edges, giving the object the appearance of a miniature structure. On two opposing sides, shallow grooves are recessed into the glass – elegant and functional pen rests, integrated seamlessly into the design. The domed lid is smoothly gilt and opens to reveal a precisely ground ink opening and a cleanly executed hinge mechanism. Remarks: This writing implement combines classical design language with the technical precision of early industrial production. The clarity of the form and the substantial weight of the glass suggest French manufacture in the first third of the 20th century. The gilt base with its vertical ornament evokes a stylised lambrequin motif, a decorative element often found in neoclassical and early Art Deco metalwork. The integrated pen grooves indicate the inkwell's use as both a functional and representational object, possibly on a director’s desk or in a private study. Condition: Very good condition. Minor signs of age to the gilding. Crystal body clear and undamaged.
