About the Item

Empire Inkwell in Mahogany and Ebonized Walnut with Gilt Bronze Mounts, circa 1820 A rare and finely crafted Empire inkwell, dating from around the 1820s. Made of richly grained mahogany (likely sapele) with contrasting ebonized walnut elements, and adorned with elegant gilt bronze mounts featuring rosettes and neoclassical motifs. The inkwell comprises four recessed containers, one of which is a sand shaker with a perforated lid, as well as two smaller holders for pens or writing accessories. The central open compartment is designed to hold writing tools such as pens or a letter opener, and a small drawer is discreetly built into the right-hand side of the base for additional storage. The refined combination of warm mahogany, dark-stained walnut, and gilded bronze details gives the piece an air of sophistication, emblematic of the Empire period’s classical elegance. Please note: there is a minor damage to the left-hand side, clearly visible in the photographs. It does not affect the functionality or overall aesthetic of the piece. A decorative and functional desk accessory from the early 19th century – ideal for collectors of historic writing instruments, Empire style, and neoclassical design. Wear consistent with age and use
