About the Item

Inkwell with Beetle Relief Origin: France Material: clear pressed glass, silver-plated metal lid Date: circa 1900 Dimensions: H × W × D: 11 × 8 × 8 cm Description: Square inkwell made of clear pressed glass with a flat, hinged lid of pewter. Each of the four vertical faces features a stylised beetle in relief, likely a May beetle (cockchafer), shown with outspread wings. The decorative motif was not applied or etched, but formed directly in the mould during the hot-pressing process. The circular ink chamber is fitted with a cylindrical collar, which holds the original removable glass insert. The underside bears the moulded inscription “LUZIA”, along with “DEPOSÉ” and “FRANCE”. Remarks: The body of the inkwell is made using the pressed glass technique, in which molten glass is shaped under pressure in a multipart metal mould. This method, widely adopted in France from the late 19th century onward, allowed for precise and durable relief decoration. The beetle motif reflects the influence of French Art Nouveau, in which natural forms were frequently reinterpreted for everyday objects. The mark "LUZIA" remains undocumented but suggests a smaller-scale production intended for the decorative export market around 1900. Condition: Very good overall condition. Glass relief well-defined, no chips or cracks. Lid with light patina; hinge fully functional.
