Description:
This elegant desk inkwell combines colourful champlevé enamel with refined material aesthetics. The oval-shaped inkwell stands on three short feet and features a star-shaped, shallow tray with a central onyx insert. Two semicircular pen rests flank the centre symmetrically. The ink container rises at the back and is fitted with a round, finely profiled hinged lid, richly enamelled in blue, ivory white, and pale red. The tray is similarly decorated with stylised scrolls, floral motifs, and ornamental accents in polychrome enamel. The interior of the inkwell shows clear traces of use and remains untreated.

The enamel decoration was executed using the champlevé technique: recesses are etched or engraved into the metal surface, then filled with coloured glass powder. When fired, the glass melts and fuses with the base, resulting in a smooth, colourful surface. In contrast to cloisonné, where the colour fields are separated by fine metal wires, champlevé allows for broader, integrated colour zones. The combination of gilded metal, vibrant enamel, and natural stone was especially popular in France in the late 19th century.
