About the Item

Inkwell with Enamel Decoration Origin: France Material: Gilt metal with coloured enamel Date: Circa 1870–1890 Dimensions: H × W × D: 8 × 9 × 9 cm Description: Square inkwell resting on four stepped feet, with a flattened, bulbous ink container at the centre and a hinged lid. The piece is defined by its architectural balance and rich enamel ornamentation: blue, turquoise and white arabesques and palmettes on a gold-coloured ground, with floral emblems set into each corner. The decoration was created using the champlevé technique, in which patterns are engraved into the metal and filled with enamel. The pierced lid echoes the vegetal motifs in an elegant manner. Additional information: Inkwells of this type were widely produced in France during the second half of the 19th century and were often part of representative writing sets. The design reflects the tastes of historicism, blending Neo-Rococo elements with ornamentation inspired by Oriental art. Condition: Very good condition with minimal signs of age. The glass liner is missing.
