About the Item
Faceted Amethyst Glass Inkwell with Brass Lid
Origin: France
Material: glass, brass
Date: circa 1900
Dimensions:
H × D: approx. 6 × 12 cm
Description:
Low, circular inkwell with a faceted body made of lightly tinted glass. The multi-angled exterior creates a lively interplay of light, enhanced by the slightly domed surface. The central ink reservoir is integrated into the glass body and framed by a neatly fitted brass collar. The plain hinged lid is unadorned but precisely crafted and closes flush. The geometric clarity of the form is effectively contrasted by the restrained construction of the lid.
Remarks:
Inkwells made of colored cut or pressed glass were highly popular around the turn of the 20th century, especially in France and Belgium. The minimal use of metal and the clearly defined silhouette reflect a transitional design vocabulary between late historicism and early Art Nouveau. The chosen color – a cool amethyst tone – was appreciated not only for its visual appeal but also as a sign of cultivated taste.
