Chinese carved hardwood and the original silk embroidered tray, circa 1860

About the Item

Chinese Carved Hardwood and Silk Embroidered Tray, Circa 1860 This beautiful and decorative piece dates to the mid-19th century. It is a Chinese export item made for the European market. It is of circular form and has an intricately carved hardwood gallery with a moulded and carved Greek key lower section. Rising above this the gallery is finely carved and pierced with a foliate and scroll design. The tray stands on four small shaped feet. The underside of the tray has a wooden panel which forms its base. Mounted on this panel forming the inside of the tray is a superb original Chinese needlework which depicts a central landscape and two figures within a shaped boarder. Around this, there are further shaped panels that contain a mixture of landscapes and floral displays. The edge is finished with boarder of continuous stylised flower heads. This intricate work is done in coloured silk threads, a metallic thread has been used to infill the background. This delicate needlework is protected by the original rebated and fitted glass panel. This piece is in good condition with some slight fading to the needlework. The hardwood frame has a rich colour and patination.
