About the Item

Kingwood writing box with brass stringing, escutcheon, carrying handles and a secret compartment containing two drawers. The interior features its original navy blue and gold tooled writing surface, two brass screw top ink wells and a removable kingwood tray for holding pens and pencils. The bottom half of the writing surface lifts up to reveal a cross ribboned back and storage area. Underneath the top half of the writing surface is further storage and a secret hidden compartment containing two drawers. These can be accessed by removing the right hand inkwell, and pressing on the base of the inkwell compartment. Inside one of the hidden drawers we found two folded up letters. One with a lock of hair which read: "I had finished my letter when an IDEA struck so forcibly upon my brain of sending you a lock of my hair, as a souvenir that I could not forcibly resist it. Not that I can believe my dear sister to Stand in need of any symbol to remember her poor brother, but that there is a great, and in my melancholy position, inconceivable pleasure in these little effusions of sentiment. I desire to send a locket, most elegantly executed and framed to my mother, but I must wait for an opportunity, as it is not possible to convey it in a letter. " The second letter reads: "I have opened my letter again to inclose one from a fellow prisoner and my particular friend, which I shall be greatly obliged to you to forward to its address, accompanied with a few lines, signifying your readings to transmit the answer to me, under cover, as a way of it reaching this place. Should you receive an answer, William will forward it to me when he writes. Pray let me hear from you soon, a thousand kisses to you, my Dolly."
