About the Item

This magnificent engraving depicts a fishing scene in the middle of a landscape with lush vegetation. In the foreground of this scene is a man standing fishing. At his feet a young woman and a child are looking at the water. Further back on the right, there is another fishing scene, this time with two men. The whole is immersed in nature. In the background is a shepherd with a herd of cattle. This scene was first painted by Francesco Zuccarelli. He was an 18th century painter and engraver. He began his training in Rome and then in Florence as a figure painter. Alter He moved to Venice. He was noticed for his talent in the art of landscape. He benefited from the protection of the English consul Joseph Smith, for whom he produced numerous works. This engraving is made by Francesco Bartolozzi who is an engraver of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. He is an Italian who had 3 years of training in painting. But he finally devoted himself to engraving. He moved to Venice. He worked in the workshop of Joseph Wagner, the publisher of this engraving. But he finally settled in London where he was appointed official engraver to George III. He retained this title for forty years, thanks to the improvement of the French technique known as red chalk, which he used to reproduce the famous portraits in the royal collection. Joseph Wagner is the publisher of this engraving. He is also an 18th century copper engraver. He is a German who was trained as a painter and copper engraver. He went to Italy around 1726. In Venice he opened a school and started a business selling engravings. frame dimensions H: 19.1 inch W: 23.4 inch.

A French landscape by Gabriel Perelle. With a modern walnut frame Gabriel Perelle (Vernon, 1604 - Paris, 1677) was a French engraver, draftsman and printer of topographic views and landscapes. A pupil of Simon Vouet, Perelle specialized in landscapes with a classical setting, not unlike those of Francisque Millet, although with clearly decorative pretensions. He founded an etching lab, with the collaboration of his sons Nicolas and Adam. Perelle was also a pupil of Daniel Rabel and produced hundreds of engravings from his drawings, as well as compositions by fellow antagonists such as Israël Silvestre, Paul Bril, Jacques Callot, Michel Corneille the Elder, Jan Asselijn...
