This splendid engraving is part of a series of 4 engravings. These différent engravings are entitled : « The archery », « the rendezvous at the fountain », « the infidelity » and finally « the death of Fleurette » presented here. This work is linked to the legend ouf Henri IV ans this love store with Fleurette. In it legend, Henry IV courted the daughter of the gardener of the castle of Nerac when Charles IX came. But Henri IV left Fleurette at the behest of his tax collector. Fleurette, overcome with sadness, threw herself into the river and drowned. This set of engravings tells this story. Here in the fourth plate, Fleurette's body lies lifeless beside the fountain. A letter is on the ground, Henri IV and other men are coming to the body of this lifeless woman. The drawings are by Alexandre Joseph Desenne, a French history painter and draughtsman. He practised his art from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. He taught himself drawing by copying the great masters. He is known thanks to the multitude of vignettes engraved from his drawings. The work is engraved by Claude François Fortier. He is a painter, draughtsman, engraver, lithographer, illustrator and archaeologist. This Frenchman participated in the illustrations of the collection of travel plates in Lower and Upper Egypt. He also took part in the voyage of exploration of Brazil and the Amazonian forest. He is a member of the Institut de France and the Académie française. Another engraver participated in this work: Bosselman, a draughtsman and painter of the 19th century. Many engravings by this artist are known. This series of engravings can be found on Gallica, the website of the French National Library. some foxing frame dimensions H: 17.9 inch W : 21.6 inch.
