About the Item

A rare 1970's lacquered steel geometric sculpture by Mexican multi-disciplinary artist Manuel Felguérez. The cut and bent steel sculpture is a composition of different geometric shapes. The sculpture is signed on one side. A certificate signed and issued by the artist will be included with the sculpture. Manuel Felguérez (1928 - 2020) is a Mexican painter and sculpture. Born in Valparaíso, Zacatecas, he moved to Mexico City along his mother in 1936 after his father's demise. He studied first at the Academy of San Carlos, but he decided to quit after realizing his syllabus was too focused on the traditional left-wing leaned Mexican School of Painting. He ended studying at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda" graduating in 1951. From 1954 to 1959, he studied in Paris with a French goverment scholarship, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Colarossi. After returning to Mexico, he was part of the Generación de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation), the first group of Mexican abstract artist who opposed to the Mexican School of Painting along Fernando García Ponce, Vicente Rojo, José Luis Cuevas and Lilia Carrillo, who was his first wife from 1960 to her death in 1974. His first individual exhibition was in the Antonio Souza gallery in 1958. He has been part of many important exhibitions around the world. His public art is featured in different places around the country. He held the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1975 and was awarded with the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 1988. In 1975, while holding the Guggenheim scholarship, he was invited to Harvard University as a guest professor. He had the opportunity to work on a computer laboratory. He would insert different mathematical operations on the computer that would translate into different geometric shapes and elements, creating a compositional system that influenced his later work. Felguérez is considered the first Mexican artist who worked with a computer in an era where PC's were still out of reach for common people. A book with the experient's results was published by the UNAM and is still printed.
