About the Item

A large, antique Chinese figure of the Medicine Buddha Bhaishajyaguru made of hand crafted gilded, partly lacquered Tropical wood, in good condition. The sculpture is dressed in a floor-length robe particularized with a swastika symbol on the chest. In Buddhism, the swastika is representative of the footprints of the Buddha. The right hand of the décor piece features the "Varada Mudra" and he is holding a nectar vessel in the left hand. The Buddha represents the late Qing Dynasty time period. Minor fading, cracks due to age. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1880 - 1890, China. Base: 10" W x 8" D The Qing Dynasty, officially the Great Qing, was a Manchu led imperial and the last imperial dynasty in the Chinese history, it was also the largest imperial in the history of china and in 1790 the fourth largest in the world history. Manchu is a Tungusic East Asian ethnic group of native to Manchuria and Northeast Asia. Bhaisajyaguru refers to as the Medicine Buddha, the doctor who heals suffering. The Varada Mudra is a symbolic hand gesture of granting wishes or mercy represented by the palm held outward with outstretched fingers.
