About the Item

Abstract constructivist sculpture in metal by Sergio Ponzio IV, Italy 1971. The sculpture is composed of bent and modelled patinated zinc sheets soldered together to create a sculpture great three dimensional volume with a variety of intriguing surfaces and shapes. Besides the variety in metal sheets and texture of the surfaces Ponzio also used the solder lines as a medium to create extra expression. After a more traditional start after art school Ponzio became friends with Nerone Ceccarelli and Victor Cerrato; famous Turin artist following a strong typical Turin movement. He got attracted to materials such as sheets of metal, zinc, copper and wood and started to make his first sculptures out of zinc in 1968. His style has a strong connection with the work of his friend Nerone Ceccarelli, the artist and founder of Gruppo NP2, Ceccarelli was a few years older than Ponzio but recognized his talents. The forms and style he used used where equal to the shapes used in the constructivist and cubism movement, it has as well some references to the Dada movement. The sculpture is signed and dated on the lower leg: Ponzio IV, 1971. The sculpture shows a beautiful patina of on the surface and stays in an excellent condition.
