Bona Omi - Plaster, Fiberglass, Wood, and Glass Sculpture by Brent Warr Studios
About the Item
"2 figures embrace to seek solace from the world around them. As the viewer looks upon the piece, the figures and images behind the portholes are blurred. Causing the viewer to guess exactly what is behind the matte paned glass. The images behind are original negatives from queer men in the military from the 1940s and 1950s that were found in digital and physical archives. This piece serves as a voice to share their stories as well as my own, growing up queer in deep Southwest Georgia. These men were forced to come up with their own language (Polari - where the title of the piece is from), ways to fit in with the world around them, and protection/safety from being thrown in jail or beaten and even killed for the people they loved.
Even today, queer people have to hide parts of themselves from the world around them (code switch) to fit into a scenario or be accepted into a room. Though the world has changed so much since the 1940s, I and many others still experience similar circumstances that these men did almost 80 years ago. As the viewer gets closer to the sculpture, they are allowed into a small snippet of these men's lives. Around the back of the piece is a hidden door, where you are allowed in their lives and can see these men fully and get a glimpse into their story."
Brent Warr Studios founder Brent Warr was raised in Georgia, USA and studied at Auburn University’s college of Architecture, Design, and Construction. Before moving to the back to Georgia to start his furniture and lighting studio, he moved to NYC to work for esteemed Interior and Architecture firms Meyer Davis Studio and Yabu Pushelberg.
Now located in Bainbridge, Georgia, Warr’s furniture, lighting, sculptures, and interiors projects are defined by a studied balance of fluidity and structure, composition and function. His practice is both intuitive and informed by an understanding of history, process, and materials. Above all, Warr’s guiding principles are humor and storytelling. Brent Warr has been featured in Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and Vogue Living to name a few.
