Born in 1963, Sébastien Kito is a French sculptor who lives and works in Paris. He has always expressed a desire to discover the culture of the country of his father, Akira Kito, a famous exponent of Japanese art in post-war Paris, and it is from this sense of dual culture that he has built all his thoughts.
Sébastien Kito thus embarked on the artistic path that several members of his family, including his father, had also followed, and in 1985 he entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
Kito was close to a number of artistic movements, particularly the CoBrA group, which his own father had frequented a few years earlier. Also close to the artists of his time, Sébastien Kito often visited Pierre Alechinsky and became Raymond Hains's assistant.
Sébastien Kito is currently investigating form and colour through his mobile, articulated and hollowed-out sculptures, which often bear anthropomorphic or animal reminiscences. His sculptures are a playful invitation to join the space occupied by the work, or to transform it by moving one of the parts of the evolving structure.
These particular relationships between the work and the space are similar to the Japanese concept of Ma, which designates the spatial or temporal interval between two things, as important as the two elements that limit it. Beneath the greatest apparent simplicity, Sébastien Kito manages to suggest complex relationships or interactions between the sculptures and the space, between the full and the empty.
