Maria Vlandi Ceramic Sculpture 'Forme Noire Avec Écritures', Greece, 2007

About the Item

Maria Vlandi is a Greek fine art ceramic sculptor who has exhibited internationally. Vlandi primarily uses stoneware clay to create abstracted and monumental forms, presenting her own discourse on form and space. As much about voids as matter, Vlandi also experiments with mark-making and surface texture, inspired by the animistic Theology of Lucio Fontana, and Sumerian sculptors from 5,000 years ago. This sculpture, entitled 'Forme noire avec écritures' – or black shape with writing – is an excellent example of Vlandi’s work, both on a technical and conceptual level. The form, slightly ambiguous, suggests a lidded vessel, when it is actually a solid piece pierced by a shaft of light. The black matte glaze is then lacerated with fine surface markings, some in gold and some without colour. This piece is a one-off work that has been signed and dated underside.

Richard Hirsch Ceramic Mortar and Glass Pestle Sculpture, 2007
By Richard A. Hirsch
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's Mortar and Glass Pestle Sculpture #1 was assembled in 2007. It's wheel thrown and hand built clay with green and black watermelon glaze, raku rust patina and hot blown glass. Two separate pieces of wood fired stoneware are assembled with a third piece -- a hot blown glass pestle. "The glass "masher" is lightly sand-blasted, suggesting opacity but yielding subtle light penetration, the perfect foil for Hirsch’s heavy clay concavities. Conceptually, Hirsch enjoys the compatibility of the two heat-driven materials, and the alchemical issues with shared chemistry seems right for themes involving vessels and raw geologic age." This three piece sculpture...
