Jim Rose, known primarily for his steel furniture, was an avid collector and scoured salvage yards for unique, interesting items. Here he has taken heavy gauge wire and formed it into a simple dog and placed it upon a salvaged steel cylinder. These repurposed items combine to form this small simple sculpture that will sure to bring a smile to its owner. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. We create an artificial scene of nature because art and design often find common ground here. The natural colours of rock, stone and moss are what first comes to the eye when looking at the scene from far away, but when moving in between the shapes you slowly feel the transformation from natural to artificial within the objects. Sculptural function as well as physical function is not an aim in itself but is instead replaced with a diverse landscape where the object floats together as a whole. Here you are allowed to explore the materials and explore moss and stone in a new way. These items contains brass chimes of different lengths that play musical notes. Swinging by breeze or touch, they release casual melodies inspired by Debussy. Melodicware not only embellishes a space as a jewel. Through interaction, it comes to life for a fleeting moment. The lush fringes of the delicate pieces invite to be touched by passers by, becoming thus an unexpected musical instrument. Agustina Bottoni Agustina Bottoni is an independent Argentinian designer based in Milan. She works for companies, private clients and self-productions of objects, textiles and furniture. Graduated at the University of Buenos Aires, and after years of working in the fashion industry, she transferred to Milan, graduating with honors of the MA in product design at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. Following, she collaborated with design studios in Italy and the Netherlands before dedicating since 2015 to her independent design practice. Exploring the language of everyday objects, these projects tell stories through a gentle use of shape. Agustina’s multicultural experience influences the research of different materials and techniques. They also encourage an emotional perception, considering objects as companions in our lives. The Ligne sculptures were made during a summer artist residency at Pilchuck school of glass. As with many of Sabine Marcelis's explorations with light, these objects were born from a curiosity to explore how a material volume can interact with a single line of light and in this case also how two very different ways of working with glass can elevate eachother. Together with talented neon benders, Sabine Marcelis hand-bent each of the neon lights to wrap around the various glass volumes, accentuating their mass and in turn, the glass volumes filtering the light. Dutch-Kiwi designer Sabine Marcelis’s work is at the forefront of contemporary material innovation in product and installation design. She works with glass manufacturers and more, forging partnerships across her industry to bring her ambitiously experimental projects to fruition. Marcelis’s focus is on allowing happenstance sensory experiences to emerge by juxtaposing combinations of unlikely materials and colors. She was educated at the Design Academy Eindhoven and since founding her eponymous studio in 2011 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, she has built a remarkable roster of clients in fashion, architecture and art. She has created signature pieces for the likes of Rem Koolhaas’s architecture firm OMA, high-fashion labels Fendi and Isabel Marant and luxury beauty brand Aēsop.
