ABOUT
A finely cast bronze sculpture of a roaring tiger, dating to the 1860s, mounted on a carved wooden base. The tiger is depicted mid-roar, its powerful stance and dynamic musculature capturing the expressive energy characteristic of Japanese bronze work from the period. The piece is signed in Japanese, likely by the artist or foundry. Presented on its original wooden base, which shows minor scuffs consistent with age. Overall in good condition with age-appropriate wear to the bronze and base. A striking example of 19th-century Japanese metal artistry.

MARKINGS
Noted for his detailed and colorful work, Bergman was signing his creations with either a "B" in an urn-shaped cartouche, or "Nam Greb" - for "Bergman" in reverse (these marks used to disguise his identity on the erotic works). They are also often inscribed ‘Geschutzt’, which refers to the model/design being ‘registered’ or copyrighted; or not marked at all, especially if the pieces are miniatures.
