Fine Japanese Meiji Bronze Okimono Sculpture of Tiger by Mitani

About the Item

OKIMONO OF A ROARING TIGER OVER A WOODEN BASE Japan, Meiji Period Patinated bronze signed Mitani to underside of belly Item # 302LOC16P This remarkable Japanese bronze okimono of a Roaring Tiger from the Meiji period exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship, showcasing intricate chiseling and meticulous attention to detail. The sleek and powerful creature is cast with a captivating curvature that extends from its tail to its nose. The body of the tiger is adorned with high-polish stripes, while the unstriped areas feature a matte texture, creating a visually striking contrast. The teeth and the entire mouth are exquisitely detailed, and equal care has been given to finish every aspect of the underside. The belly bears the relief signature for "Mitani." Measurements: 8 5/8" H x 15 1/4" W x 5" D [with base]; 7" H x 3 3/8" D x 14 1/2" W [bronze only] Condition Report: There is a curvature to the wooden base that causes one leg of the bronze not to sit flush. Original patina beautifully preserved throughout. Cleaned, waxed and a very fine presentation.
