Art Deco Saint-Clément French Red Glazed Ceramic Lion

About the Item

We kindly invite you to read the full description below, which offers both technical and historical details to ensure the authenticity of our pieces. Spectacular and large red glazed ceramic lion, crafted in the Art Deco style. The majestic animal is portrayed in a classic stalking pose, just moments before the attack—its powerful, well-defined muscles highlighting the tension coursing through its body. The sculpture exudes strength and drama, a vivid embodiment of the Art Deco movement’s fascination with dynamic forms and the raw power of nature and humanity. The workmanship is particularly refined: the lion was first shaped into its elegant, fluid form and given an initial firing at approximately 1000°C. An ancient technique was then employed using a “cristalline” coating— a transparent glassy glaze traditionally applied with ox-hair brushes. The red glaze was then brushed onto the entire surface, a delicate step that demands great skill to ensure even coverage. The final firing, at temperatures between 920°C and 940°C, set the glaze permanently. Traces of this meticulous process can be seen on the underside of the base. The piece was made between 1930 and 1933 in the Lunéville area of France, in the style of the renowned Saint-Clément ceramic manufactory. Founded in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette, Saint-Clément is one of the oldest and most prestigious ceramic factories in France, located in the Lorraine region. The broader Lunéville-Saint-Clément area is celebrated for its rich ceramic tradition, known for its exceptional craftsmanship and diverse artistic styles. Over the centuries, artisans from the region have produced a wide variety of fine ceramics—plates, vases, figurines, sculptures, and decorative objects—distinguished by vibrant colors and meticulous detailing. Today, Saint-Clément ceramics remain highly sought after by collectors and continue to represent a standard of excellence in French decorative arts. Throughout history, the lion has been one of the most powerful and enduring symbols in art and mythology. A solar animal par excellence, it evokes light, vitality, and celestial energy. As the "king of beasts," the lion has long been associated with royalty, courage, strength, and wisdom—an iconic presence that resonates deeply within the collective imagination. Saint Clement Blanche Letalle French Art Deco Vase In Ceramic And Pure Gold
By Blanche Letalle, Saint-Clément

We kindly invite you to read the entire description, as we strive to provide detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. This distinctive and captivating vase stands out for its understated Pompeian red color, admired for its exceptional elegance and plasticity. The body is adorned with linear, refined, stylized stars in relief, embellished with pure gold accents. The pottery used is glazed earthenware, and the glossy finish suggests the use of vitreous glazes to achieve a bright, uniform effect. The gilding on the stars was likely applied using the ceramic lustre technique, where gold is added at a low temperature after the initial firing, resulting in a shiny and durable finish. The vase was crafted in the Art Deco style between 1930 and 1935 at the Saint Clement pottery...
