About the Item

A striking Art Nouveau French grès art pottery figure of a dog, signed and crafted at the Rambervillers manufactory, by renowned ceramist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Cytère (École de Nancy). The company takes its name from its location in a town in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. The sculpture in flamed blue finish sandstone, dating from the early 20th century, portrays a seated bloodhound puppy with a downward gaze, finely modeled with balanced proportions and a sensitive rendering of the animal’s features. The stoneware is heavily potted and raised on a rectangular base, showcasing the mastery of Cytère’s handwork. It is decorated in a rich blue and green streaked glaze with a lustrous iridescent finish, a hallmark of Alphonse Cytère ceramic work, and bears the impressed maker’s marks to the underside.
