About the Item

A fine and unusual French antique Grand Tour table thermometer in patinated bronze. Set upon a naturalistic trefoil shaped patinated bronze base with an animalier group of a stallion and Mare remeniscent of Mene's famous "Accolade". The thermometer is held in a patinated bronze "tree". Most unusually the thermometer scale is on porcelain and the scales are for Farenheit and Reamur. The Reamur scale was invented by Rene AntoineFerchaud de Reamur, 1683-1757. It was popular in France in the 18th and early 19th century but went out of fashion. Some say, tongue in cheek, that it was not popular because as the scale had boiling point at 80 degrees R nobody went on holiday to France as it was too cold (85 degrees farenheit converted to 23.5 degrees Reamur).
