About the Item

A wonderfully modeled Japanese Hirado Mikawachi ware porcelain figure of a dog, dating to the early to mid-19th century, during the late Edo to early Meiji period. This bright white, translucent-bodied porcelain—finished with a clear glaze—exemplifies the refined detail and quality associated with Mikawachi kilns. The dog is portrayed standing alert, with its tail arched gracefully over its back and its expression calm, stylized, and endearing. The sculpting is crisp yet warm, with just the right amount of abstraction and anatomical elegance. Its expressive face and poised stance show the subtle balance between playfulness and dignity that characterizes the finest Hirado figures. Hirado porcelain, especially from the Mikawachi kilns in Kyushu, was renowned for its bright white kaolin-rich clay, which allowed for fine, almost lace-like detailing. These kilns were originally under the patronage of the Hirado daimyo and produced works intended for the elite class, including zo-moku (animal figures), Buddhist imagery, and miniature scholar's objects. The craftsmanship of Mikawachi ware reached a high point in the 18th and 19th centuries, rivaling even the great Kyoto and Arita kilns in terms of refinement. This delightful piece has been part of my personal collection for over 20 years, cherished not only for its rarity and quality but for the personality it brings to a shelf, desk, or collection of Japanese porcelains. An exceptional example of Edo-to-Meiji period Japanese animalier porcelain, rare in this condition and with such charm.
