Klas-Göran Klaesson Sheep Sculpture in Stoneware, Sweden 1991
About the Item
Standing not only as a decorative object but also as an evocation of Scandinavian folk traditions and the artist’s deep respect for nature and craft, this piece is sure to be a lovely a conversation starter.
In ceramic design, there are few materials that have stood the test of time, and one of these is stoneware clay. Known for its durability and versatility, stoneware has been used for centuries across cultures to create a variety of things, from simple household items to elaborate sculptures, like this sheep. This charming sheep sculpture captures a whimsical yet grounded interpretation of Swedish rural life. Crafted with an eye for form and texture, the sculpture portrays a plump, stylised sheep. Its surface has a tactile, wool-like pattern that invites closer inspection. Like all great design, for children or adults, there is a sophistication to this creation. This sheep is visually graphic, with its visually and tactilely interesting material. The natural tones of the stoneware clay—soft grays and earthy whites—enhance its rustic appeal, while its rounded body and subtle detailing reflect Klaesson's skill in blending abstraction with realism.
This piece is undoubtedly as captivating from afar as it is up close. Whether placed in a living room or a playroom this sheep is sure to add a touch of whimsy to any space.

Göran Malmvall "Swenks Fur" Dining Table, Sweden, 1950s
By Goran Malmvall
Located in Utrecht, NL
This “Svensk Fur” or ‘Swedish Pine’ dining table is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.
The Malmvall pieces that appeal to most are the models designed for “Svensk Fur”, for the sheer fact that they seem completely contemporary and undated. The pieces of the line, such as this table, are often compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though Malmvall’s designs are exceptional on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This table holds a natural expression with its airy and organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material and the creative use of the tenon and mortise joinery. The rectangular tabletop showcases the solid pine’s pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel. The legs have carved out vertical lines, a smart detail that elongates them optically. Göran Malmvall, the youngest son of Karl Andersson, was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His expertise can be traced not only in this detail, but also in the legs’ joinery technique.
Swedish modern – despite its name – in many ways transcends the word ‘modern’, and so does Malmvall. Like the style, the Svensk Fur pieces can be incorporated successfully into contemporary and traditional interiors alike, lending themselves to a timeless and universal appeal.

Göran Malmvall "501" Pine Dining Chairs for Svensk Fur, Sweden 1950s
By Goran Malmvall
Located in Utrecht, NL
The Svensk Fur produced line of Göran Malmvall furniture is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design of these chairs relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.
Göran Malmvall’s Swedish pine designs often get compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though its pieces are exceptional designs on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The backrests are formed by straight lines that slightly curve near the edges. This curvature is followed by the seats that are carved ergonomically, creating visual interest. The joinery is visible throughout the chairs, and features both bolts and seamless wooden joinery which is always a sign of quality craftsmanship. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability.
The simple design of these chairs is in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, it also portrays a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via the Swedish pine.
