Jens Michael Andersen (1859–1931) founded his ceramic company in Rønne, Bornholm, in 1890 by taking over the Th. Stibolt factory. Trained under Lauritz Hjorth, Andersen and his son Daniel soon developed popular lines of black terracotta and majolica ceramics that gained national and international recognition. In 1916, the company was renamed Michael Andersen & Søn, and in 1930 began marking its pieces with the Rønne town arms – three fish. The company reached artistic prominence when Daniel Andersen created the distinctive Persia glaze, which won a gold medal at the 1935 World Exhibition in Brussels. After Jens Michael Andersen’s death in 1931, the company expanded its industrial production while continuing to experiment with new glazes. It remained family-run until 1993, when Solveig Ussing took over and maintained the tradition as a working ceramic studio and shop in Rønne.
