Murano Glass and Gilt Bronze “Crowned Crane” Bird Sculpture by Licio Zanetti, Signed
Two Pieces: the Murano Bird and Gilt Bronze Bird Feet Base
A dramatic and elegant mid-20th century Murano glass sculpture attributed to Licio Zanetti, depicting a stylized crowned crane or hoopoe bird with exuberant modernist detailing. This two-piece composition features a blown and hot-worked glass body affixed to a separately cast and gilt bronze base modeled as textured bird legs and webbed feet.
The avian form is richly decorated with embedded murrine canes in black and white, creating an “occhio” (eye) motif reminiscent of peacock feathers or exotic plumage. The surface is further enhanced by the inclusion of silver leaf (foglia d’argento), producing a shimmering, softly mottled texture beneath the glass. The head, elongated neck, and beak are rendered in clear and black glass with swirling internal ribbons, culminating in a fan-shaped white crest with black tips, evoking the exotic profiles of East African crowned cranes or hoopoes.
The glass body is signed near the mounting point, consistent with other documented works by Zanetti and his studio. The sculpture disassembles into two parts via a secure threaded mount for safe handling and transport.
A striking blend of Murano artistry and zoological abstraction, this sculpture makes an impressive statement in modern, coastal, or eclectic interiors.
