Pair of Ceramic Staffordshire Spaniel Dogs
About the Item
This listing features a pair of ceramic Staffordshire Spaniels with gold detailing and glass eyes. These guarding dogs were popular for being placed on top of fireplace mantels, they were often called "hearth spaniels" or "fireplace dogs". Other breeds of dogs were produced for the same purpose, but the Spaniels remained the most popular in the 19th century. These dogs were most likely made in bulk at potteries in Glasgow and Portobello. In addition to being placed on mantels, they were also placed on windowsills. All spaniels are painted and decorated by hand, which is why so many of them are unique and different. Like most that were made, these Spaniels have a chain and lock attached to their collar.
