TSUNEMITSU Bronze Tiger With Terrifying Glass Eyes, Meiji, 1868-1912
About the Item
Bronze Roaring Tiger with Terrifying Eyes by TSUNEMITSU, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
This magnificent bronze sculpture of a roaring tiger, created by Japanese artist Tsunemitsu during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), exemplifies extraordinary craftsmanship and attention to detail. The tiger’s powerful posture and ferocious expression are enhanced by the inclusion of spectacular glass eyes, which add an eerie and captivating dimension to the piece. The double patina finish enriches the bronze, bringing out the intricate details of the tiger’s muscular form and bringing a dynamic sense of movement and energy to the sculpture.
The tiger’s striking ferocity and dynamic representation of its raw power make this piece an exceptional addition to any Japanese art collection. The piece is also stamped with Tsunemitsu's signature (see photo) and has subtle cracks in the mold under the belly, a telltale feature of early Meiji period work.
Materials: Bronze, glass
Dimensions: Width 62 cm (24.4"), Height 26.7 cm (10.5"), Depth 16.5 cm (6.5")

Tsunemitsu (常光) was a Japanese bronze sculptor of the Meiji period (1868–1912), a period of significant transformation in Japan. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan opened its doors to Western influences, ushering in rapid modernization in various sectors, including the arts. This period saw Japanese artists, such as Tsunemitsu, blend traditional Japanese techniques with Western-style aesthetics, creating a unique fusion of styles that appealed to both domestic and international markets.
The Meiji period was marked by a influx of Western ideas, especially in the decorative arts, which Tsunemitsu adapted his works. His pieces often depicted nature, animals, and elements of traditional Japanese culture, but were also influenced by Western artistic trends. Tsunemitsu's works were recognized at international exhibitions, such as the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, where Japanese bronzes were presented to the world.
Tsunemitsu's mastery of combining tradition and modernity made him one of the leading figures in Japan's transition to a new era of craftsmanship. His works, such as this exceptional tiger sculpture, are a testament to his artistic vision and technical expertise.
