About the Item

Antonio PANDIANI (1838-1928, Italy) : "Menestrello" Exceptionnal nuanced dark brown patinated bronze cast Dimensions Height = 72 cm Width = 47 cm Depth = 30 cm Very good condition, great patina and particullary sharp and finely shizzeled bronze cast Provenance : Private collection, south of France. Condition report : Excellent state of conservation Cleaning carried out by a professional restorator beautifull original patination The dismantling and reassembly carried out by the restorator for cleaning does not reveal any inscription or marking. Note : Complete analysis file available upon request Exhibition of the work: 1877, Naples, Menestrello and Diavoletto, marble group. History of the work: A series of casts is made around the theme of the minstrel around the 1880s, executed in bronze from this period onwards, most probably in the Pandiani foundry, of which Antonio is also the director Comments: This is a particularly qualitative and very neat cast by A.Pandiani which bears neither signature, stamp nor foundry stamp, which is unusual in view of the edition of the sculptor's bronzes, usually stamped "A. PANDIANI MILANO" with sometimes a date Could it be the artist's model, or a model chef? In any case, it is a particularly closely watched cast (perhaps the sculptor's most accomplished as we observe slight variations for each comparable of this bust on the Art market) Other elements of analysis, such as the fact that the bust is not signed, that it is of better quality of execution than comparable examples on the market and of very slightly larger dimensions, and that it has an unusual assembly (visible screws) allowing the disassembly of the sculpture (perhaps for taking impressions to edit variants in particular), point us in one of these two hypotheses

Bronze Casting from the 1930s Giovanni De Martino
By Giovanni De Martino
Located in bari, IT
De Martino is a classical artist, known for the production of sculptures of small bronze busts, in particular (“scugnizzi”, fishermen, commoners) with realistic features. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples under the guidance of Stanislao Nome, Gioacchino Toma, and Achille D ’Orsi, from whom he learned the ability to portray the most realistic details using them on very young subjects. Very young he moved to Paris where he performed small sculptural groups, exhibiting frequently at the "Paris Salon" where he won the prize of the Louvre Museum for the bronze work Le Pêcheur de criquets (The Fisher of locusts, Naples, private collection). Returning to Naples, he returned to a socialist realism and produced sculptures depicting characteristic Neapolitan types, especially urchins, “street urchins”, little boys and young fishermen. From 1916-1931 he was master of the sculptor Angelo Frattini. Later the dominant theme of his production was childhood, in particular thoughtful, sad, gaunt children were represented in his works, on whose faces the signs of abandonment and suffering emerged. De Martino became known with the nickname of “The sculptor of children”.
