French Art Nouveau Bust of a “Breton woman” alabaster wood

About the Item

Beautiful and very refined alabaster bust depicting a young woman with her head slightly bowed, in a reflective or prayerful attitude, made around 1900 in France. It is part of the cultural fashion that encouraged groups of painters in the second half of the 19th century to settle in different artistic colonies located in certain enclaves of the Atlantic zone and northern Europe; Brittany was one of them. Towns such as Pont-Aven and Concarneau became centres of attraction for various artists interested in the lifestyle of the rural and seafaring lower classes (especially attracted by the female figure), who took it as a source of inspiration for their art. Alabaster was a very popular material during the 19th century. It provides a soft, translucent finish, allowing the sculpture to take on subtle tonal variations, giving the skin a delicate appearance. Both the young woman's hairstyle and clothing are depicted in great detail, demonstrating the master's technical mastery. A face with idealised features that captures a serene and calm beauty. The headdress that frames the young woman's face is the typical Breton headdress, a raised structure, generally made of white lace or linen with fine embroidery that originated in the region of Brittany and was worn by Breton women as part of their regional costume and became a symbol of cultural identity. Furthermore, the sturdy wooden base on which it rests is richly carved with floral motifs and small hummingbirds. A piece for an exigent and refined art collector , it,s absolutly Gorgeous and unique!!!!
