About the Item

These charming antique busts originate from the western Austrian state of Tyrol, which sits on the border of Bavaria in Germany. The pair are modelled as a Bavarian woodsman and his female companion, and evoke a sense of pastoral idyll and calm. Each bust is painted in pastel shades and supported on a socle base. The style of the two busts shows influence from the Arts & Crafts movement, an international wave of design in the decorative and fine arts. The style originated in Britain in the early 19th century and ended in Europe in the early 20th century, lasting for a total period of approximately one hundred years. The movement held a strong influence on European art for much of the early 20th Century. The Arts and Crafts movement advocated for the use of traditional craftsmanship and simple forms of design. It incorporated and played upon a range of existing styles, including influences from the Medieval, Romantic and folk decorative tradition, as these beautiful antique busts do. Male height 50cm, width 30cm, depth 18cm Female height 47cm, width 27cm, depth 18cm.

A pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann Maresch
By Johann Maresch
Located in London, GB
A pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann Maresch Austrian, Late 19th Century Man: height 49cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Woman: height 48cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Depicting a woman and a man of similar appearance, age, dress, and in a similarly spritely, lively, and engaging manner, these figures were made by Johann Maresch in the late nineteenth century, c.1880. A skilled Austrian maker, similar in output to the more famous Friedrich Goldscheider, Maresch gave these figures a tangible vitality and energy to their representation, showing them as hard-working yet undaunted and undimmed by their labours. Their manner of dress is similar, even down to the similarities in the colours used to paint them. She carries a bright orange-red urn...

Pair of Orientalist Bronze Busts by Cordier, 1861
By Charles Henri Joseph Cordier 1
Located in London, GB
Pair of Orientalist bronze busts by Cordier, 1861 French, 1861 Man: Height 42cm, width 32cm, depth 18cm Woman: Height 40cm, width 26cm, depth 16cm This impressive pair of bronze busts were made by the renowned French sculptor Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (1827-1905). Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits. The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily. Both faces are expertly carved to achieve a human likeness, and the two figures are similarly dressed in embellished shirts and robes. The patination is exceptional throughout, providing light and shade to the facial features and garments. Gilding can also be seen on the woman’s earring...
