About the Item

Beautiful sculpture in brown earthenware modeled in the expression of a woman in polychrome glaze with blue hair, made in Germany, 1930s. Erwin Spuler (1906-1964), who initially studied at the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart, studied with Georg Scholz and Ernst Würtemberger at the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe from 1923-1930 and was a master student of Walter Conz, entered the service of the Karlsruher in 1931 majolica factory. His first works designed for the manufactory are picture and relief tiles, some of which were produced in large quantities. In addition, small sculptures were created, mostly as one-off pieces. Since 1933 Spuler worked as a construction ceramics. His favorite motifs are female nudes, initially in the footsteps of French Impressionism, which approach the officially propagated ideal of beauty in the public works of the late 1930s. In addition, ceramics were created in the private sector, suggesting a continuous engagement with colleagues and artistic tendencies. Signed with stamped Mark,Karlsruhe,Germany ,3390.
