Chinese Pair of Stone Guardian Foo Dogs/Guardian Lions from 18th Century

$7,500per set

An 18th century pair of Chinese stone foo dogs/guardian lions on square bases. This rare pair of Chinese guardian lions displays a male and a female, each sitting on a base that is lightly carved with a floral motif. The animals are in lively and impressive attitude, as expressed by their open mouths and Kinetic pose, which are indeed appropriate for their guardian role. Their manes and fur are carved as cloudy whirls, reminding us of their celestial aspect and enhancing the dynamism of the statues. In tradition these lions where used as stone guardians in the exterior courtyard of a temple. This rare Chinese, 18th century male and female pair of stone guardian lions would be an impressive and uncommon decorative item in most homes, perhaps in a doorway to welcome visitors.
