400-600 year old sandstone figure of a "Demon" carved in deep relief. In good original condition with a natural age-related patina that emphasizes the figure's age and authenticity. Mounted on a light sandstone base. From a Danish private collection. Burma, 1400-1600. This sandstone figure is an outstanding example of Burmese religious art, where demonic figures were often used as protective elements at the entrances of temples and pagodas. The figure reflects the historical and cultural significance of demon figures in Burmese architecture, intended to ward off evil spirits and protect sacred spaces.
