About the Item

Ramiz Barquet 1920-2010 (Mexican) Cetaceans (Whales) circa 1978 in Bronze on cylinder wood shaped base. Puerto Vallarta artist Ramiz Barquet, captures three swimming or dancing abstract formed whales in this unique sculpture. It is Kinetic, as you can turn / swivel sculpture as base stays stationary to experience different views. Signed to underside of one whale. Purchased from the estate of a prominent St. Louisian, Dr. James T. Chamness. Chamness marked the underside, that this was unique, and that the other sculptures made had two whales, also that the mold was destroyed. Wood base is 4.88d x 4.19h, few dings to wood base. Barquet was born in Mexico City to Lebanese emigrants and studied in Mexico City and later continued in Canada; In Montreal and Quebec attended the School of Fine Arts and Furniture. On his return to Mexico he collaborated for several years with the sculptor Augusto Bozzano. From 1946 he made several trips to Europe, where he attended art courses in Paris and Florence. Later in life, he took up residence in Puerto Vallarta, where his large public sculptures became landmarks, such places like the Malecon Boardwalk or a similar sculpture to above titled "Shark" in Spiral statue (1996) located on Pulpito street at Los Muetos beach in the small plaza area between the El Dorado and La Palapa restaurants. Currently some of his works are in cities of the Mexican Republic, as well as in Canada, the United States, Japan, China and various countries in Europe and Latin America.
