About the Item
Early large organic mid-century modern hand sculpted wood nude female sculpture by artist / sculptor William Conrad Severson, (1924-1999). A beautiful early piece of work, signed Wm. C. Severson and dated 1956. Abstract female form carved out of single piece of heavy wood in the modernist style with long flowing hair, and is mounted to custom wood base connected by brass. Has warm artist applied finish, old age crack in wood is stable.
Severson was born in Madison Wisconsin, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madsion. Internationally known, he began his career in the late 1950's as a sculptor of corporate, institutional, liturgical & private commissions. His sculptures can be seen in 28 states & in Saudi Arabia, Singapore & Moscow. He was a co-founder & former president of the St. Louis Sculptors Gallery & the first artist-in-residence at the Missouri Council of the Arts program. Many of his works - which were done in stainless steel, copper, bronze, lead, concrete, wood and stone. One of his last major sculptures, the Millennium Spire, is located in Belleville, Illinois.
Of the period of fellow artist / sculptors Alexandre Noll, Wendell Castle, James Prestini and Isamu Noguchi.
