Charles Adrien Prosper D'epinay, French "Implacable Putto" Marble Figure

About

Charles Adrien Prosper D'epinay (French, 1836-1914) "Implacable Putto" Marble Figure / Sculpture signed and dated 'd'Epinay / 1881' marble 36 in. (91.5 cm.) high This present sculpture, is based on a model shown by Epinay at The Royal Academy, London in 1874 under the title "An implacable executioner". Another marble version is in the collection of the Mauritius Commercial Bank. The model was further edited in bronze by Ferdinand Barbedienne for the family’s collection. The Mauritian sculptor Prosper d'Epinay began his sculptural studies unconventionally, under the tutelage of the caricaturist Jean-Pierre Dantan in Paris. He moved to Rome in 1861 to join the studio of Luigi Amici. His work was very popular in England where he exhibited at the Royal Academy for many years, and his aristocratic following included Queen Victoria.
