"Cupid and Psyche, " Rare Art Deco Sculpture with Exotic Theme by Henning

About the Item

Although this sculpture is reputed to be a telling of the story of Cupid and Psyche -- the Classic story of the union between Soul and Love -- it also serves as a story of the coming together of West and East. The pale nude female figure is shown being embraced and nuzzled by a ruddy-brown figure from South Asia or the South Pacific, shown nude and with an ankle bracelet. The sculptor was Gerhard Henning, who created this piece for Royal Copenhagen; Henning was known for sculpting a series of pieces that showed young female figures being seduced or loved by exotic figures from mythology and around the world. This piece is also stunningly realized, with figures that invite review from every angle, and rich, gorgeous glazes.
