"Eve and the Serpent, " Unique, Carved Art Deco Ceramic Sculpture by Merignargues
About the Item
Superbly carved -- not molded -- and beautifully glazed, this stylized figure of Eve, sensuously encircled and surmounted by a powerful serpent, was sculpted by Marcel Merignargues, an important French artist who marked the piece with his "MM" monogram on the face of the piece. Merignargues was clearly interested in the Eve and Serpent motif because a large piece with the same theme, dating from 1936, can be found in La Piscine museum of art and industry in Roubaix, France. The piece is marked "Made in France" and includes the sculptor's signature on the bottom.
