Ermanno Nason Christ of the Glassblowers Murano Glass and Iron Pipes Early 1970s
About the Item
Intense and passionate glass sculpture from Ermanno Nason, using his favorite glass, the acciaio gray.
This warm transparent gray color is often used by glass massiccio Sculptors, with great results in figures. It has almost a brown earthy tone. Livio Seguso, Lordano Rosin used this glass for their earlier masterpieces. Ermanno kept using it and became his signature. It has a great way to enhance the dept of a piece, keeping the transparency that glass needs. The refraction is muted by this glass avoiding to pick colors from the objects nearby, still keeping the lens effect.
Ermanno challenges himself with a personal interpretation of the crucifixion of Jesus. It's not sufferance or glory, it's almost a calm sleep after a struggling battle. The body shows the weakness of Jesus, legs are skinny and in an stiff almost unnatural position. The face folds on the chest and the chin points to it. It recalls the Pietà Bandini of Michelangelo.
Body details are of an outstanding detail. See photos and inquire for a video.
The cross is made with soldered unprotected glass pipes. This is the reason for the title.
From the 1970s, owner of the sculpture said it was made before the one now at the Duomo of Murano, for this reason I'm assigning an earlier part of the 1970s.
Glass body is 80 cm / 32 inches tall and same width.

Crucifix on Calvary, Called Plague of Christ, France, Early 18th Century
Located in Milan, IT
Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world. At his feet the ordeal full of symbols: evil (snake) with the apple, the 'Memento mori' of human bones...
