About the Item

Fortunato Galli (Italian, 1850-1918) "Sea Nymph", White Marble Sculpture, late 19th century, signed "F. Galli"on a carved white marble pedestal. Sculpture: 64" H x 18" W x 16" D; overall: 97" H; pedestal: 32" H x 18" Diameter. The sculptor, Professor Fortunato Galli, has depicted a sea nymph rising from the waves, her hands outstretched, and her hair enveloping her upper body. The marble is a testament to the ability of late 19th-century sculptors to create statuary of such realism and intricacy as has rarely been seen in other periods of sculpture. The sculpture falls into a tradition of Italian sculpture which arguably emerges out of the mid-19th century verismo sculpture movement. Marbles in this tradition captured the imagination of visitors to world fairs who were entranced by the technical skill on view. Along with Galli, these sculptors include some of the most famous names from this period: Cesare Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi and Emanuele Caroni. This marble is one of Galli's most significant sculptures.
