Italian 19th Century Marble Statue of Psyche on Her Original Pedestal

About the Item

A stunning and very high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue title Psyche Abandoned on her original Rosso Levanto marble pedestal. The Rosso Levanto column is raised by an octagonal base with a fine circular socle shaped support with a mottled wrap around band. The circular central support also displays most decorative wrap fillets while the circular top displays a fine mottled border. The wonderfully executed white Carrara marble statue above depicts a beautiful winged nymph sitting on a rock with richly sculpted blooming flowers. She is draped in a masterfully executed flowing garment holding a hand up to her face in a charming manner. The sculpture represents the moment in the story of Cupid and Psyche where Psyche discovered who Cupid was when she saw him sleeping after they made love but oil from her candle woke him up and he flew away on Angel wings. Psyche was actually pregnant by Cupid who was technically her nephew. She was sad and then went to her sister Venus who was Cupid’s mother to get her help winning back Cupid without realizing Venus’s deceit.
