Salvatore Fiume (1915-1997) was a fascinating and relentlessly inventive Italian artist and writer, a larger-than-life figure who worked in a surrealist idiom, creating fantastic painting, sculpture, ceramics and architecture -- often with archaic and anthropomorphic/zoomorphic themes. This vessel, "Gallo Impertinente" (Impertinent Rooster), is from a series of ceramic sculptures that Fiume first made as prototypes in 1950 at his Lake Como studio, but only produced in a small edition (about ten examples of each design were hand-made, though an edition of 150 was planned) in the 1990s, during the last years of his life. This piece is signed "FIUME" and marked "82/150" (despite this edition number, only a handful were actually made). It is in perfect condition. We are proud to also be offering another example from this series, "Donna con Vaso / Woman with Vase".
