About the Item

Large bronze subject with medal patina in high relief on a granite base. Sculpture representing a young woman seated dressed in an antique drape, holding a parchment in one hand and delicately removing her veil with the other, a particularly elegant figure with a drape which testifies to the influence of the Renaissance which comes to pass. add to the ideal of the Roman years. The model depicts an allegory of thought, designed in 1876, this sculpture received the Grand Prix at the Salon the following year.Signed Chapu, bearing the stamp of Thiebaut Frères, founder in Paris and bearing an inscription on the front face "Au docteur Terrier, le grand et venéré Maître, souvenir de son élève, le docteur Désiré Bernard". The son of a coachman who became a concierge in Paris, he studied at the Petite Ecole then, from 1849, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he received instruction from Pradier and Duret. He successively won the second grand prize in medal engraving in 1851, the second prize in sculpture in 1853, and finally the first grand prize in sculpture in 1855. He then went to Rome and remained there until 1861. His very abundant production, often inspired by the antique, earned him many honors and distinctions. He was elected member of the Institute in 1880. His Joan of Arc in Domrémy, whose marble was exhibited at the Salon in 1872, revealed it to the general public and enjoyed considerable success. Chapu's works appear in many museums as well as on monuments of Paris such as the Town Hall, the Sorbonne, the courthouse, the Opera, the Gare du Nord, several churches, the Printemps stores and in parks.
