Large 19th Century French Bronze "Prince Hamlet & the Gravedigger, Shakespeare"
By Thiebaut Freres
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Monumental 19th Century French Bronze Depicting Prince Hamlet & the Gravedigger, from Act V, scene i. of shakespeare's tragedy. Cast by Victor Thiebaut, Paris. Signed on base: Par Vor Thiebaut 1865. and Costa de B. Height: 51" (129.5 cm) Width: 33" (83.8 cm) Depth: 23" 58.4 cm) Victor Adolphe Thiébaut , born in 1828 and died in 1888 was one of the most illustrious founders of French art. He was the creator of the Art Foundry Thiebaut Brothers ,one of the largest and most prestigious art foundries in France during the 19th and 20th centuries. His achievements are visible throughout the world and especially in Paris. In 1849, after being associated with him, his father Charles Antoine Floréal left him the reins of the family foundry " Thiébaut & Fils ", a company manufacturing loops and medals, cylinders for printing canvas and paper, machine parts steam and other industrial objects made of bronze and copper. Two years later, in 1851, Victor Thiébaut decided to start a new activity of art foundry. He created the "Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry". It is from this time that the house will experience great prosperity and international artistic renown. Victor Thiébaut was a perfectionist. He believed that the perfection of cast iron was the main point of making a work. This way of thinking earned him the trust, the friendship and the advice of the sculptors of the time. The first works of Victor Thiébaut are exhibited throughout Europe. The London Exhibition in 1862 gave him the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor . That same year, he was elected mayor of the 10th arrondissement of Paris . Over the years, the fame of the Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry enabled the company to produce more and more important works in collaboration with prestigious artists. In 1860, Victor Thiébaut realized his first Parisian work: the fonts of "Agriculture" and the "Work" of Gumery. These works are visible on one of the fountains of the square-Émile Chautemps. In 1861, he produced a monumental work for the city of Paris: the bronze group "Saint Michael slaying the devil" by Duret, installed on the fountain Saint Michel. In 1863, another monumental work installed in the heart of the capital. Victor Thiebaut performs the statue of Napoleon I er , installed at the top of the Vendôme column . The statue was shot down in 1871 and repaired in 1875 by the Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry. Between 1864 and 1899, Victor Thiébaut realized many monumental works, still today, throughout the capital, including " The Triumph of the Republic ", place de la Nation , the "monument to Joan of Arc", place the Pyramids , the "Lioness of the Sahara", the Louvre palace , many works present in the Luxembourg gardens , the Tuileries gardens , the Jardin des Plantes , and in many other places. In 1878, the "Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry" cast the work " Charlemagne and its Leudes ", installed on parvis Notre-Dame . Victor Thiébaut died in 1888, leaving his sons Victor and Jules with orders for the family business. Until his last days, Victor Thiébaut worked on two monumental orders that will be completed and installed after his death. One of the most visible works made by the "Fonderie Thiébaut Frères" was undoubtedly the replica of the "Statue of Liberty", installed on the bridge of Grenelle ( Swan...

A wonderful late 19th Century Animalier bronze group of a hare resting on its hind legs with its ears raised in an alert position with excellent rich olive green and golden patina and fine hand chased surface detail, signed Dubucand, stamped with the EV Foundry stamp and Numbered 875 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 10 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1880 Materials: Bronze Book reference: Animals in Bronze by Christopher Payne SKU: 9017 ABOUT Dubucand Hare Alfred Dubucand (25 November 1828 – 1894) Dubucand was born in Paris and was a French animalier sculptor of the 19th century. His works were often entered into the annual Salon art exhibition in Paris where he contributed works over the course of his career. He was one of the prize pupils of Antoine-Louis Barye. Dubucand made his debut at the 1867 Salon with a wax model of a dead pheasant, a rather inauspicious start when considering the higher quality sculptures he would submit later in his career. He modelled mainly animal groups, producing a number of deer, dog, and horse sculptures. His better casts feature a warm, mid-brown patination, sometimes coming in even lighter shades bordering on a very light yellow, being nearly the colour of the bronze metal itself. He frequently experimented with chemical patinas, learning the patination process from his teacher and mentor Barye who stretched the boundary with his now famous dark green patinas. Dubucand paid strict attention to the anatomical detail of his subjects, often being so concise that he actually showed the veins in the legs of his deer and elk sculptures...

19th Century Animalier Bronze Sculpture entitled "Falcon" by Jules Moigniez
By Jules Moigniez
Located in London, GB
An excellent mid 19th Century French Animalier bronze study of a falcon perched on a branch using its outspread wings to balance and with its beak open. The bronze exhibiting excellent intricate hand chased surface detail and very fine rich brown lightly rubbed patination, signed J Moigniez. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 23 cm Width: 23 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1870 Materials: Bronze Book reference: Animals in Bronze by Christopher Paine Page no. 79 SKU: 9000 ABOUT Jules Moigniez (French, 1835 ~ 1894) Moigniez was a French animalier sculptor of the 19th century. He worked primarily in bronze and frequently exhibited his sculptures at the Paris salon. He was best known for his bronzes depicting birds, although his skill and versatility enabled him to produce quality horse sculptures (primarily racehorses), dog sculptures and hunting scenes. His bird sculptures were among the finest ever created in his time. Moigniez was born at Senlis, Oise, France in 1835, the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez’s father bought a foundry to cast his sculptures, which was of great benefit to Moigniez as he didn’t have the added foundry costs that most of his contemporaries had to pay. Moigniez studied sculpture under the tutelage of Paul Comoléra (a student of François Rude) in Paris. It is quite likely that Moigniez’s attraction to bird sculpture was a direct result of his education under Comoléra, who was himself a bird specialist. Over the course of his 40-year sculpting career Moigniez exhibited thirty works at the Salon between 1855–92. His first submission in a major art exhibition was his plaster, Pointer Stopping at a Pheasant, at the Exposition Universelle of 1855.[1][2] Moigniez was known for the fine detail and chiseling of his sculptures. His bronzes—usually cast using the lost wax method—were always immaculately chased and patinated, and were especially popular in England and Scotland.[2] More than half of his output during his lifetime was sold in the United Kingdom. By the end of the 19th century, his sculpture had become popular in the United States as well. In contrast with other animaliers of the period such are P.J. Mêne and Antoine-Louis Barye, Moigniez’s bird sculptures often incorporated highly detailed bases complete with bushes, extensive foliage and undergrowth. His castings were generally of excellent quality with a variety of patinas, the gilded and silvered patinas being the most desirable and sought after by collectors. His bronzes could be reproached for an excess of detail, a result of overly-finicky, over-worked chiseling. Moigniez received redemption, however, by portraying in his sculpture a certain “elegance of attitudes”. His Chien braque...

HEAVY ANTIQUE SiGNED GRAND TOUR BRONZE STATUE OF THE FOUR HORSES OF SAINT MARKS
Located in GB
Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this stunning original Circa 1880 hand made in Italy Grand Tour bronze of the Horses of Saint Marks This is an original example not later reproduction, they have the foundry stamp to the base which I can't find the maker of sadly. These are a very good size and weigh a great deal In terms of the condition there is nothing to note other than good honest age and use related patina, to my hands and eyes it’s in museum quality. Dimensions Height:- 16m Width:- 26cm Depth:- 15.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask The Horses of Saint Mark (Italian: Cavalli di San Marco), also known as the Triumphal Quadriga or Horses of the Hippodrome of Constantinople, is a set of bronze statues of four horses, originally part of a monument depicting a quadriga (a four-horse carriage used for chariot racing). The horses were placed on the facade, on the loggia above the porch, of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, northern Italy, after the sack and looting of Constantinople in 1204. They remained there until looted by Napoleon in 1797 but were returned in 1815. The sculptures have been removed from the facade and placed in the interior of St Mark's for conservation purposes, with replicas in their position on the loggia. The sculptures date from classical antiquity. Many scholars believe they were sculpted in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, noting similarities to the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome (c. 175 AD). But some say the evident technical expertise and naturalistic rendering of the animals suggest they were made in Classical Greece of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. In light of their short backs and long legs, it has been argued that they were originally situated above the eye line, probably created to top a triumphal arch or some other grand building. Perhaps commissioned by the Emperor Septimus Severus...

French Antique Bronze Sculpture "Fighting Panthers" by Georges Gardet & Thiebaut
By Georges Gardet, Thiebaut Freres
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A powerful group of two panthers engaged in combat, it was initially sculpted by Gardet in 1896 and presented at the Paris Salon of the same year as Les Panthères. There was received with acclaim by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts: "Le merveilleux est la souplesse des peaux sous lesquelles on voit s'amasser les muscles, se detendre les nerfs, palpiter les organs... L'artiste a su, par une patientre patine, apparenter le grain au pelage vrai des fauves [The beauty is in the suppleness of the skin under which we see the muscles amass, the nerves relax and the organs throb... The artist has, through a patient patina, simulated the grain of the coat true of the wild animals]" Large and dramatic in scale, the model captures the sheer ferocity of the creatures as their lean muscled bodies twist and writhe in a mortal dance. The rocky naturalistic base is signed in block G. GARDET and is sealed along the back with the foundry cachet for Thiebaut. The surface is finished in a dark-brown overall patina sealed under wax. An example executed in marble is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (acc. no. 21.32). For similar examples, see Christies, sale 1774, 18 April 2006, lot 19, a much smaller 11 3/4" model cast by Thiebaut Freres that achieved $ 10,200 USD; also see Christies, sale 5959, 9 August 2010, lot 605...
